Andy Johnson, owner and sweep
A warm welcome
One sweep, one van, and a lot of sooty chimneys.
My name is Andy Johnson and I own and operate a professional chimney sweep business based in Martley. We chimney sweep in Worcester, Malvern, Bromyard, Leominster, Tenbury Wells, Droitwich, and all of the surrounding villages.
We take great care and pride in our work and a certificate can be provided with every sweep. We are always looking for new customers with sooty chimneys to clean, so please give us a call.
We are flexible with appointment times to suit you, as we operate weekdays, with weekends and evenings by arrangement. Please give me a call: we can usually accommodate an urgent job at short notice.
What we do
We don’t just sweep ’em, we build ’em.
As chimney sweeping is a seasonal activity, the rest of the year we remain active in the building trade. I am a skilled bricklayer with over 30 years experience, not only of sweeping chimneys but also building the houses they are attached to.
The sweep
Every visit- 01
Rotary power sweeping
The very latest power sweeping technology, using the Rodtech system. Cleaner flues with less strain on the old brickwork.
- 02
Traditional brush and vacuum
Manual sweeping where the chimney calls for it, with the fireplace sealed off and the room protected before we start.
- 03
Stove checks and seals
Your stove or multi fuel burner looked over while we are there, including door rope seals when they need replacing.
- 04
Blockages cleared
Birds’ nests, leaves and debris cleared out so the fire draws properly and the fumes go where they should.

Dust sheets down and the fireplace sealed before a brush goes up. We leave the house clean and tidy, every time.
The builder
All year round- 01
Fireplaces built and opened up
Wood burner fireplaces built from scratch, old chimneys opened up and reclaimed fireplaces fitted.
- 02
Chimney rebuilds and repairs
Chimneys rebuilt, restored and repaired, with the brickwork done properly.
- 03
Pots, cowls and flue linings
Chimney pots and cowls fitted, flue linings, and chimney maintenance and repairs.
- 04
Stove installation
Stoves installed, and fireplaces built or restored around them.
Quality fireplaces and chimney rebuilds and restorations are a particular speciality. From a single cowl to a full rebuild, it is the same pair of hands.
Recent construction projects
Fireplaces we have built
Brick, oak and a stove that draws properly. Built by the same sweep who will look after it.

Pots and cowls
Keeping the birds and the rain out.
Old terracotta pots with nothing on top let in nests, leaves and rain. A set of cowls fitted from the cherry picker keeps the flue clear and the fire drawing well.

Power sweeping
Accredited users of Rodtech power sweep systems, so you’re in safe hands.
Using the very latest power sweeping technology as well as the more traditional brush and vacuum method ensures your chimney is swept as cleanly as possible.
The technical stuff
When power sweeping, the brush head expands through centrifugal force to suit the flue being swept. Because it is not a traditional brush there is no surface tension being created in the sweeping process, as the head adjusts to fit the flue.
The force of the sweeping action is increased by the speed of rotation, and this has the effect of stiffening the brushing action. For older style chimneys a low speed is used. For a heavily built up clay or steel flue, faster speeds give an unbelievable cleaning action.
In short, this system cleans chimneys more effectively whilst causing less strain on the structure of the flue.
Low speed

Faster speeds
for heavily built up clay or steel flues
How a fireplace works
Soot build up is a fire hazard, as the chimney may catch fire.
As a fire burns, the air going through the grate fuels it, and it releases numerous gases which rise, as they are lighter than the surrounding air, and escape up the chimney out into the atmosphere.
As these substances pass through the chimney, soot, which includes a flammable element called creosote, starts to accumulate on the walls of the chimney.
Over time this accumulation begins to obstruct and will eventually block the chimney. This can lead to an inefficient and even unsafe fireplace. Dangerous chemicals such as carbon monoxide and dust may then enter the room.
A soot build up is also a fire hazard, as the chimney may catch fire with temperatures hot enough to cause damage to floorboards, chimney pots or much worse.
Why have your chimney swept?
- To aid the prevention of chimney fires
- To reduce the risk of dangerous fume emissions
- To increase the chimney efficiency by eliminating the build up of soot
- To clear obstructions such as nests, leaves and debris
